11,000 voices – this is Our City, this Our Story

Join us on March 7th for a completely new kind of event, giving a powerful insight into growing up on Tyneside.

Our City Our Story is happening for the first time on March 7th 2019. Organised by City of Dreams, and hosted by Live Theatre, this unique event showcases stories made by more than 11,000 children and young people living in NewcastleGateshead.

Running 1pm to 6pm, and featuring work from more than 50 collaborators, this is an afternoon full of film, theatre, music, poetry, animation, art, virtual reality, photography, alternative city maps, interactive exhibits, and more.  All brought to a close by a panel discussion hosted by comedian Mark Thomas.

Our City Our Story is a new kind of event, a platform for young people to tell their own stories in the ways they want them told.

Statistics offer a one narrative of childhood in our city: 1-in-3 live in poverty, an above-average number are in local authority care, many fail to achieve 5 good GCSEs, 31% suffer mental ill health. Our City Our Story takes a different approach to understanding the experiences, struggles, interests,  dreams and ambitions of local under25s.

We are bringing young people’s creative talent to the fore and letting them tell us what life is really like, in an event planned and programmed by young people, packed with things made by under25s in NewcastleGateshead. And everyone is welcome to join us.

In December last year we put out a call for creative work made by young people, that told a story from their experience of growing up. We were inundated with submissions. The creative storytelling talent in our city is astounding! The City of Dreams Young Champions Board, and our team of young programmers, have been working hard to plan an event that includes as much of this fantastic work as possible.

On March 7th you will be able to see over 4hours of films, music videos, poetry and cityofdreams-80animations in our screening room. In our exhibition spaces you will explore young people’s maps, art and photography, and take part in interactive soundscapes and virtual reality. In the theatre you can see 2hours of musical brilliance, and numerous drama performances.

Our young guides will walk you through Live Theatre, explaining how we’ve worked with Newcastle University to identify the top issues that matter to local young people: discrimination, poverty, inequality, gender and risk, and being in “the system”.

Almost every geography of our city, and almost every demographic of young people, have something to say at the Our City Our Story event.  It’s going to be an eye-opening and inspirational day. It’s going to make a difference to how people think about growing up in our city.
